THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF GEORGE MURPHY
George Murphy with Panavision Camera
"Of all the wonderful ways we have to tell stories, photography is unique in its ability to let us linger in the captured moment, to explore in our own time the reality we place before the lens."

The photography of George Murphy draws upon a diverse creative history. It is influenced by his strong interest in both the arts and sciences, and a passion for the natural world. Often in conjunction with his role as a photographer, Murphy has worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, digital effects artist and filmmaker.

The ongoing demands of Murphy's career in feature films have often had to take priority over his editorial and fine art photographic work, though even in this arena, Murphy is often behind a camera as part of the process.

Murphy explains, however, that no matter what media he is focused on for a particular job, it is photography and the still image that has always been at the heart of his drive to create imagery.

Some may find Murphy's role in feature films at odds with his pursuit of editorial and documentary subjects, but Murphy notes it's all about being true to the integrity of the intended media. While Murphy's work in the motion picture and television industries have certainly made him an expert on computer graphics and digital image manipulation, it has also made him value, more than ever, the journalistic integrity of pure editorial photography.

"As a photographer, there are few things in life that match the rush one gets from making a powerful image of an elusive event or moment. For me, the thrill of revealing that very real thing that happened in front of my camera, is unique."

Murphy confesses that despite early successes pursuing commercial and editorial photography work, for the past twenty years it has been the motion picture and television industries that have dominated his career. But they have also afforded him the opportunity to collaborate on set with leading cinematographers and directors in the pursuit of creating great imagery; and in his role as a Visual Effects Supervisor, Murphy has become quite comfortable directing talent and crews under pressure. All of these experiences have enhanced the diversity of Murphy's skills as a photographer able to handle a wide range of photographic subjects
